The invite to Artist has been sent out for the "POPEYE THE SAILOR & THE AUTUMN SOCIETY" show in July 2011. I have been excited for awhile about this show. Who knew I was such a Popeye fan? But it seems I am. I do have fond memories of laughing like made watching the cartoon as a kid. I guess it really stuck with me. I have a clear desired end piece for the show and am aware that I never do one off so I will be exploring the perfect end piece and in doing so I've decided to also try 100 day project by drawing Popeye (or Popeye related characters) on my favorite post-its everyday from 030711 - 061411. Wish me luck!

Last night was the final session of figure drawing with Glen Vilppu. It was really nice to have that Tuesday night obligation to draw from a live model. The final session I found my self so not wanting to draw in any classical way. However at the end of class when we shortened the poses from 25mins to 2mins I found my self in my happy drawing spot and amazingly started drawing more anatomically on model while using a pen. Yes, these drawings are done with a micron pen and are way light...

This next group of drawing is from the being of class when I was less focused on the prescribed method of drawing. I was just not in that mind set to be so academic, even with Glenn saying "it's freeing to draw this way.". Using the contour to go over the surface of the model slowly building up from a light value. I drew my freeing way and used the session as a way to take notes on design and form.

After sitting on what the drawings looked like in my head I picked the drawing I wanted and did a quick trace of it using a marker and nailing (well for me anyways) the design notes I had made.

I then transfered the drawing using a light box to water color paper. At first I wasn't happy that I only have Cold Press paper but I figured I would work with it. I am happy with the end result but part of me still wants to see the details I would have been able to make with a smoother paper. But I also don't have acrylic inks so I wouldn't be able to do the layers that I want anyways sooooo it all worked out, I guess...

The past four weeks have helped me get my head thinking about illustrating and I'm liking the direction things are starting to take. I also have lots of material to work from and plan to sit in on more figure drawing sessions down the road.

Getting closer to a style I'm happy with.

SO again, I've been working on developing a pin-up type style. I love Bill Presing's girls and style of painting but I need to develop my own. I'm heavily influenced by Roy Nelson and have always been a HUGE fan of J.C. Leyendecker. So why not merge all of them with my own whatever it is that we bring to the table. Thus far everything has been all over the place from almost too life life back to way to cartoon like. I'm landing closer to cartoony then I originally thought or planned but I also realized it was the angular cartoon look I wanted to stay away from and not necessarily the cuteness of what might be. I found I like being very rounded in my line work, even with quick changes in direction I try to keep it rounded.

Yesterday I did this drawing with no particular direction or idea. But drawing the boat deck just felt natural.

I then wanted to work on line quality in general so I traced the drawing over even though some details where ugly and although I like the sexy face it still wasn't the direction I wanted to go in the long run.

Then in the evening I thought it would be funnier and cutter if her top had blown off. I scratched out some moments on random posits till this morning came around. Exploring ever step of the incident from flapping half on, to across her face, to tangled in her hair but ended with well it should fly off and cover the face of the boat driver. Even though the the top is not seen in this drawing well.... it was blown off...

I then started looking at Roy Nelson and doing some doodles (I'll post those later) and came up with a new design for the pose.

As of now this is where he is at. Not totally happy with what is going on with his pose.

Here is the two cobbled together...

and a very faint overall rough for me to look at and rework. Need to do some boat research and see if I like the overall. A little torn about using an old style boat, I don't mean to be drawing old style things, I want to draw modern things with a classic feel. But the older boat just feels so much better then some white decked fiberglass boat.

Have a bunch of hand studies that I'm happy with. From here I want to do some more girly drawings before I move forward. stay tuned...

A couple drawings... I have a small freelance job that could turn into a simi bigger freelance that would turn into a bigger freelance. Sound familiar? Well, for now I can't share, but it's got me drawing pinup type drawings and finding a new style for myself. need to scan and snap some of the other drawings that I like better but for now here is small progress of a drawing I kinda liked then found the shapes then totally destroyed the goodness but gave me notes for furthering the drawing.

I've also been taking a figure drawing class (i'll post some of that too) and plan to continue figure drawing on tuesday nights when this one is over (two more classes). and below... is a couple doodles I did at work of Mordecai and Rigby I posted earlier on facebook but looking to share more on wee-blog

For the LOST series finale we went to the Rynda's. They had a polar bear blind art event. So on friday when I stopped off for my pay day beer (even though I am still on hiatus and didn't get paid on friday), I drew up a couple ideas and then picked on to draw up all pretty like. Here are my ideas... I was going to do an Eko drawing but I liked the idea of the polar bear alot!

I was super lucky and got this amazing drawing of Hurley lifting up his shirt to reveal Lockes face as his belly. I have no idea who did it, but it's awesome! I'll post it later.

There is a new art show up in the Cartoon Network lobby, the reception is going on as I type... It is Art and Fan Art of the show Adventure Time. Chogrin (a.k.a. Joe) organized the show displaying work from the talented artist on the show (go check out the Frederator blog for pleanty of artwork) and members of "the autumn society". I couldn't help myself, so I drew up a little fan art of my own. I really need to scan these in, they are kinda hard to see. Enjoy!

Been playing with the pin-up cartoons here and there. Today I had a chance to do a more "final", seen below below.... The first one is just a random post-it drawing, I liked the gesture.

Here is a little water color I did. It's been a long time since I've picked up a brush. Need to play with the technique a little more and then some more...

So I am settling in at work this morning and looking at blogs and thinking about style again. I say what if I did a linear cartoon style with "real" shapes for eyes. Oppose to crazy ovals of all angles and what not. Most of the drawings where getting too cute in the eyes, or where they??? Well I did this drawing and of all the drawings I did that day this is spot on what the model looked like! If this was a drink and draw session this is most likely what I would have come up with.

Pinup Girls, session 01

This past Saturday I went figure drawing, the theme was pin-girls. The group meets every other week "LA Classic Pin-up Model Drawing Group", it's a nice group with good models (well I went once but from what I've seen posted, they do well at sticking with the theme). The session was 3hrs, and it was the first time in years that I went figure drawing. I sketch crawl and drink-n-draw and all that, but it's been a long time since I've sat in front of a posed model. I am pretty happy with the start and am posting some of the results. From here I want to refine and find a style. I keep fading back and forth between cartoony and stylish, which is a line with many fuzzy edges (the balance between the two that is). I'll be posting more later. Since the next two meetups I will be out of town or not available I will set sometime aside and work on what I have done so far. The next model session will be in April for me, which may do me well in finding my style and/or ambition.

So here are some of the things I've been working on:

These first couple are from a project I've been working on with Uncle Phil. I've been doing the Character layout/key posing. Things are on hold right now but eventually I'll share the finished product, which will be online for everyone to see.

This is a logo I am designing for these cool crates that go on bikes. I've been dragging my fet a little bit but should have it finished up this week. At least the first pass logo, which will be turned into a branding iron!

Last week I had a virus and ended up with a few symptoms that where not virus related and had a bunch of crazy test done, way to graphic to give details. But I was pretty excited to actually get checked out so in depth that I can say I do not have cancer. Course my brain never got scanned so who knows what 's making that thing tick.

I owe a hug thanks to Uncle Phil, for not only getting me into CN for a tour in which I managed to get a hold of a test but also when I dropped the test off I was able to do it in person. On of the reason I picked the section of the outline I did was the characters. Dr. Barber (seen in Pt.1) is my favorite character on the show. He's not on that often but boy he really cuts me up! The second section featured Bubbie and how could you not like the nurturing Bubbie and her continual love and forgiveness to sweet Flappy. The premise for the episode was Bubbie is sick and Flapjack was going to find a way to make her feel better.

Back in February when Michele and I first pulled into LA, I had a working computer and was ready to start drawing. The first test I managed to take was for the Marvelous Misadventures of Flap Jack, and I had a blast taking it. Flap Jack is a board driven show which was fantastic way to start testing here in LA. Being board driven means the board artist is the writer. Upon receiving the test materials which included an outline and model pack I was asked to pick a section of my choice and board it. Below is the first part of the second act, the outline for the entire test section was two small paragraphs in which I needed to get from point A to point B. After Writing and Thumbnailing the story out I then spent SuperBowl Sunday in front of the TV drawing my test on my Cintiq using Sketchbook Pro. Two days later my G5 tower would die on me, just enough time to have finished.

David and Goliath artjumble rough:clean:final

I always say I like the rough beter the then final but in truth I love the whole process. I am fixated on the the simplistic line that is under everything and the fact that the simple in starts it all. In truth It's been a long time since I've tried to finish anything as I've lived int he world of storyboard and have roughed every idea for the past 10yrs... I am enjoying looking at clean up and color after all this time (since I come from an illustration background it is cleanup and final). I'm so enjoying where I'm at right now! I posted a thumbnail to final production from "Little Einsteins" a little over a year ago but I have not tested myself iin awhile. So many thins I'd go back and retest (don't get me started on color, I'd be a better director then applier right now).
I do have a few thoughts on being "on model" versus "off model" that I'd really like to dive into but not at this moment. For now I jsut wanted to post my progress on this simple project from last week.

Next: I need to record for my animatic but int he mean time I will add some missing panels and may pick a couple minor single panel assignments for the week.

I like to share, so here is my clean pass and color pass of the fist panel for the David and Goliath artjumble. Eventually I will take it into photoshop and add some texture, maybe not by weeks end. For now I am cleaning everything else up and coloring simple.

Update: Upon looking with fresher eyes I decided to look at a warmer pallet for the BG. Like it better, will futz more later.

I haven't worked on my storyboard in over a week. Today I got back to it but then found myself playing with one of the new backgrounds. I just wanted to do a quick let me see but got a little carried away. Need to go back into , try to push some elements. There is a foreground piece missing, which ties into the story.

with more reflections... I like the way it holds the composition without, less clutter keeps the focus. Again, missing element in FG. just roughing things out now.

Totally saw this dude driving down the road with his poodle hanging out holding onto the side view mirror. His beard was capable of driving the car but to be honest I think the poodle might have been his beard or vice versa... I'm not sure. But I do hope to see them around town again.

Father time lives in Riverdale NJ, drives a dodge and owns a poodle.

Ok, so I follow Brigitte Dale. But now she's on ABC, which is good when you put aside big machine moving things forward cause without the machines we'd have no major outlet so... And most animators (yes, most of my audience are animators "hey jose!") at some point wanted to or thought they would work for Disney, and did in some way.

Happy Columbus Day

Been pretty happy with my progress. Well.. could be moving faster but taking the time to think it all over. Been boarding a storyline for a new idea, plus thumbing and writing another piece for the same idea. Love it to be pitched, but putting no pressure on it. Might just be a short or two or three, well see. Of course that means I want to post lots of new drawings but I don't want to share till I'm done.

So I'm working on a Storyboard of my own... all mine! mine mine mine! :P After almost a year break, which was very well needed on levels beyond, I've come back with vengeance! here I give you a drawing that I feel some bits are good but displays many many faults. First and forth most the characters are all wrong, which means very little out of context. However there are such subtle things that just seem to be stamped on, trying to break from that.

I'd show you what I changed (everything, but position of characters) but it would do you no good with out the rest of the story. I am happy that the new panel tells a much better story.

Getting warmed up

So... after a year of dormancy i am getting warmed up to take a test mid to late September. Been looking at my favorites of where I left off last hence the earlier Milt Gross inspired strip. Today I picked up Hell Boy at the book store. I was never a superhero comic book guy but... I was in the book store and picked up Hell boy to look at.

I love that one of my drawings ended up looking like Peter Boyle. There is something perfect about that. Well, not too hard to make that casting call, if you could time travel...

Lost Art

Every show has a pile of lost art. Here are some thumbnails that I do for the Storybooks on Little Einsteins, which eventually are used as Layout in Storyboard. Below the Thumbnails, I posted screen grabs from the final episode (the file name correlates with the thumbnail number). I included some grabs that show how the layout and story change. The layout of the puzzle box in relation to the Sphinx changed for obvious interaction. As far as story, the final prize has also changed; the original premise delivers a tadpole as the puzzle is completed which turns into a frog, the final story reveals snow to cool off the Sphinx.

So Yogi slipped into my recent Layout at work. Not totally my fault. The "bad guy" (a.k.a. Big Blue Jet) stole a picnic basket in which our heroes (a.k.a. The Little Einstien's) had to then retrieve.

This past Saturday I played 9hrs of poker which comprised of 5 tourney's. it was a great long day with 40-50 players each game. I had a marathon head's up where I grabbed a 2nd place, also hit a 6th place. The other games I was just outside the bubble. But on the third game my Brother-in-law ended up in a heads up with this skinny little guy that looked like a chihuahua. He was very animated sitting there in the dominate chip lead, three times he went "ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLIIIN!" As he flicked both hands... Repeating it over and over at the top of his lungs. It was the funniest thing. Of course he would end up losing the hand and almost lost his sure thing. But my Brother-in-law was laughing harder then thinking and the guy caught the river on the last "ALLLLLLIIINN!" I will be drawing more of this guy...
Last night (after taking a first place in Poker) I updated the #2 mom store with a couple "World's Worst Grandpa" products. Unfortunately I need to rework the logo for the trucker hat. Cafepress only allows a 2" height for the artwork on the trucker hat, so I may have to loss the starburst to make the wording read better :(

It has recently come to my attention that a lot of people think their Mom is the best, she's tops, grade "A". Well how could this be true? I get on the PATH train this morning, empty train. It starts to fill up and just before the doors shut this old guy dashes in and sits next no me. Before he is even seated he's already talking to me as if I knew him or I knew he was talking or I don't know what was happening... "I just meet an Indian Women! Last year when I was here I meet a man that was born in India but he was from Kilimanjaro. He spoke many dialects including two with all the inflections and clicks and stuff. Boy that's neat. I couldn't even try to do it. His family moved when the Military tried to move in. They went to London that's where he learned English. There's over 22 dialects in Africa...or something like that. I have his info right here (pats his chest pocket), I still talk to him. I can't wait to write that nice lady, I have her info..."

I would say only in New York, but I was still Hoboken at the time when I meet him. I could tell you all kinds of things about his visit from Boston, how much rent was when he lived in NYC on 14th and 9ave., I can also tell you about the first California wine that won an award, I know he was going into the city to do his laundry, that last night he came home (his friends house in Jersey) at 2 am and he was soaked (translation: Drunk), and I also know he was quite a character that I would love to meet again and again.

I couldn't help draw him as he talked as if he was the only one in the room. He wore tan polyester pants, a salmon color sweater, a green checkered jacket, a knit cap, glasses, and a backpack with his laundry in it. He spoke in a rapid fashion riddled with facts when he would suddenly complete a thought and fall silent, but not for long. I never got his name so I call him Red, he looked like a Red. I would have gave him my info if I was more awake and if he didn't vanish as quickly as he appeared. The doors where closing at Christopher street and he jumped up without even standing up.

The drawing at top is spot on! I enjoyed drawing him so much I think I will keep him. I had started my commute by looking at Milt Gross, "Pete the Pooch". I was a little warmed up and it was perfectly timed when Red dropped in the HOB line. I've included the squirrel sketches I was working on for my storyboard, and I know think I want to include Red.

Make note of Red's bottom teeth and how they angled in. There was a gap between the two front bottom teeth the opposite of Squirrels top gaped teeth...

Squirrel matches up with Red rather well.

Milt Gross is GREAT! I look forward to studying more of his work...

In todays Hollywood reporter:

"Peter O'Toole is in final negotiations to star in Lionsgate's "The Christmas Cottage," a feature based on the Thomas Kinkade painting.

The film will be directed by Michael Campus, and production is scheduled to begin this month in Vancouver and Whistler.

"Cottage" is said to be partly biographical and based on events that led American painter Kinkade to become an artist. O'Toole will play a painter Glen Weissler, based on one of Kinkade's mentors.

"Cottage" also will be produced by the Firm and Kinkade's Birch label. Producers are the Firm's Julie Yorn, Michael and Arla Dietz Campus as well as Thomas and Nanette Kinkade. A holiday release is planned for the film, which is part of a production deal between Lionsgate and Kinkade."

I would rather the film deal with how good of a business man Kinkade is. He developed a business model that Artist just rarely pull off. If they do manage to make it happen they normally end up on the short end of the stick, such as Paul Frank who can't even sign his own name because someone else owns his signature!

No drawings to post today. I've been up the past two nights working on a freelance job. Been drawing bees!

Today on Cartoon Brew there is a post concerning an event, "a gathering of animation book authors for a meet-and-greet, book signing and I think a panel discussion." Now as we all know the best book is Preston Blair's book, but there is always lots of room for books. Event he worst book contains at least one morsel, even if it's an example of what not to do. That is thing that concerns me about what I saw at this post. IF YOU ARE GOING TO PUBLISH A BOOK ABOUT ANY FORM OF ART THE COVER OF SAID BOOK SHOULD LOOK GOOD!!! Just look at the four book jackets that they put up for the event, Animation Book Look.

If you are writing a book about the industry then you most likely know some damn fine artist. Do what every you need to do and work with the publisher to get good artwork and design for your book!!! It means the world!

And please use something appropriate, this cover does not represent what you will find in the book (a good example of how important it is to pick an appropriate font as well, these fonts do not work for the artwork nor does the type jump off the cover and grab your attention):

On the flip side Cartoon Brew is riddled with good book cover design including Cartoon Modern and a hand full of comics DVD covers, and what not...

This poster is a great representation of our industry, because they used artist from our industry to make it. If I saw this on a book cover that said "learn everything you never thought you forgot about the animation industry", I would buy it:

Squirrel studies

Spent a good amount of drawing time this weekend working on squirrel design. Found a look that I'm happy with. Has the looseness that I like with good balance of volume. I keep wanting to work on it more but think I'll just keep pedaling in circles. I think it best I start working on the storyboard and really find out if he's working. Need to study Milt Gross!

The first pic is a page of me exploring. I really like the Stimpy inspired full body but kept going back to the thin neck wiry look.

I played around with a final version but again I want to start working on the storyboard and not worry about locking things down. I want my "model" sheet to be about expression not details.

Happy 8th Anniversary!

Today, this March 28th 2007, marks 8 years that I docked in NYC. Had no idea that I would be here this long. Nor did I think I would gain a wife, family, and so many friends. It's been another great chapter or two or 10 in my book. I'm very curious to the next step, more then ever before. Something big is on the horizon, just can't tell what it is. Which is the exciting part. It's just that BIG! It's a good big.

In reflection to my professional advancement since here; I really wish I had had a mentor, in my profession. It just never happened. I found myself rising very quickly in a pond that I thought meant more then it did. And I did it under my own power leaving me not sure how to move forward. I've been studying allot this past year and am now ready to put things into practise. In the end I hope to find new direction in a nurturing environment where I will finally get to grow to the potential I know lies deep down inside.

At 12:00am March 20th my wife's Uncle Donald passed away. He was a great guy that always stole the floor with great stories or a fart machine... or any type of loud annoying device he could get his hands on. He loved clowns and could have easily been one and never told us. He had this great way of twisting up his face to kinda say "hey, I'm goofy and so are you". The last time I got to see him was Sunday the 18th and right before my very eyes he let out this enormous yawn and turned into a bear. I think he got confused by the return of winter and decided to hibernate.

mouthin' off

For better or worse. Since there is no function as of yet I was having fun exploring. I've been inspired by John K.'s recent entries about mouth charts and lip sink. So much so I "plan" to take these further and have a talking head that can actually act, oppose to following a mouth chart.

Some of the drawings hit, some stay within a comfort, others are about to fall apart but just might hold up, and of course most shouldn't even be posted.
